MP Derek Thomas has put his name to a new set of ambitious goals aimed at improving people’s life chances and access to careers both in his West Cornwall constituency and across the whole country.
The ‘Levelling Up Goals’ are a practical response to the agenda to level-up Britain in the recovery from Covid19 designed by the former Secretary of State for Education, Rt Hon Justine Greening.
She has worked with Britain's leading businesses and universities to pinpoint the key challenges that, if resolved, will create a level playing field on life and job opportunities.
The 14 Levelling Up Goals have been inspired by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals which are designed to be a “blueprint to achieve a better more sustainable future for all.”
The Levelling Up Goals include closing the gaps in literacy that emerge in early school years, tackling the digital divide, building sustainable homes and communities and building up personal financial security, and are intended to set out how the ambition to level up Britain can be achieved.
Mr Thomas said: “I believe that the launch of the Levelling Up Goals provides a very practical checklist and guide that will enable government, education, businesses, communities and others to address the long running lack of social mobility and inequality of opportunity that exists in Britain.
“These goals give us a clear set of objectives to level up communities.
“I hope that the Levelling Up Goals can transcend party politics and set clear objectives for the recovery we need to achieve and will identify the challenges that need to be overcome to build recovery in local communities.”
Justine Greening said: “It’s great to have MPs like Derek committed to playing a leading role in supporting the local recovery from Covid19.
“Levelling up is ultimately about change on the ground in communities up and down this country. From mental health to supporting our young people to get their schooling back on track, we can work together to make real progress in the recovery from Covid-19.”
