What West Cornwall is doing to help fight the battle against climate change was the subject of the first of a series of Climate Focus events co-hosted by MP Derek Thomas and WI Climate Ambassador Pippa Stilwell.
Well over 60 local residents concerned were able to attend the virtual meeting at which Pippa, Jane Haslam from Sustainable Pendeen, Jonathan How, chair of Penzance TC’s Climate Emergency sub-committee and Katharine Lewis, from the Helston Climate Action Group, all gave presentations detailing the work that is going on at a very local level in encouraging people to change their habits and become more eco-friendly.
Mr Thomas said: “Pippa and I organised this event in order to better inform local residents in relation to climate change and so that we can all better understand what action can be taken locally to support climate change action groups and Cornwall Council in efforts to address the impacts of climate change.
“Naturally, as Government actions and measures will play a huge part in determining our success in fighting climate change, there was also the opportunity to discuss Government policy and scrutinise its effectiveness in reducing carbon emissions and protecting the natural environment.
“It was a very lively meeting and our speakers showed that there is a lot of fantastic work going on in West Cornwall. I hope that the Focus Event was able to explain and illustrate how action at even an individual level is worthwhile and contributes to the battle against climate change.”
The next Climate Focus takes place on March 24th at 4pm when Cornwall Council will be setting out the progress made towards meeting Cornwall’s 2030 net zero emissions target.
