In response to a growing concern about and awareness of the need to combat climate change, West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas has produced a comprehensive report for constituents, detailing what is being done at both a national and local level.
The ‘Carbon Neutral Report’ is a 50-page document, looking at what was being done by Government pre-2015 and documenting the progress that has been made in every succeeding year since.
Mr Thomas said: “Following the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report in late 2018 that warned that we had 12 years to limit climate change catastrophe, the issue of tackling harmful emissions moved from being a topic of conversion to THE topic of conversation across Parliament and pretty much every briefing or meeting I attend in Parliament today will include discussions on how we reach net zero.
“Great progress is undoubtedly being made but I’ll never deny that more could be done and this report is to help general understanding of what action is being taken.
“Constituents are looking for decisive and comprehensive action to respond to the challenge set by the IPCC but so much of the activity is poorly communicated and it is not made clear how this will impact everyone of us.
“I’ve always taken seriously the responsibility we share for our planet and made conscious decisions my whole adult life towards caring for the planet rather than abusing it.
“I know that there will be many who will not be convinced but I hope that the report captures the sheer extent of Government and Parliament commitment to the climate crisis, reassures some and helps the conversation move on to where the gaps remain and what legislation and action is needed.”
