MP Derek Thomas is encouraging people across West Cornwall to organise or take part in events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day on 8 May.
The VE Day anniversary events will allow the nation to celebrate the generation which saved the UK from tyranny through a series of events designed to tell the stories of those who served in the Second World War and honour their memories.
Events on 8th May will include street parties, beacon lighting and other commemorations including a service of thanksgiving attended by hundreds of veterans at Westminster Abbey.
At 3pm, extracts from Sir Winston Churchill’s victory speech will be broadcast along The Mall, recreating the moment he addressed the crowds in London, before veterans take part in a procession.
Mr Thomas said: “We must never forget the selfless sacrifice and years of service that the war generation made to ensure we can all enjoy the freedoms we do today.
“I hope there many events across West Cornwall commemorating this historic moment and would also remind veterans, from both the Home Front as well as from the Armed Forces, that they can take part in the VE Day events in central London by contacting the Royal British Legion.”
