MP Derek Thomas has praised the speedy and effective work of both Government and Cornwall Council which is ensuring that Cornish businesses will receive more than £281 million in grant funding to help cope with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Cornwall received by far the biggest share of the £12.3 billion handed out to local authorities from the Small Business Grant and Retail, Hospitality & Leisure Grant funds and within two days of the Government funding becoming available, around 10,000 businesses across Cornwall received a total of £116m in grant funding.
A further 3,500 businesses have applied to Cornwall Council within the last few days for a business support grant and, in total, 24,000 small businesses and businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure industry are expected to benefit.
Derek said: “I am very glad that by giving the county by far the biggest chunk of funding, the Government has recognised the unique position the Cornish economy is in with regard to its reliance on small businesses which are heavily reliant on the seasonal tourism trade.
“I also pay tribute to staff at Cornwall Council for ensuring that these grants, which will often prove the difference between businesses continuing to trade or shutting up shop, are reaching the people who need them so speedily.
“Business owners should have received a letter from Cornwall Council and, if they have not yet applied for a business support grant, I urge them to do so as soon as possible and if you haven’t received a letter, but believe you’re entitled to support, please get in touch with the Council.”
