MP Derek Thomas has welcomed Government plans to mark St Piran’s Day today in the capital (Friday, 5th March).
The Communities Secretary, Robert Jenrick, has written to Cornish MPs including Mr Thomas, to say that the county’s flag is being flown outside the Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government HQ and on the Department’s social media channels to recognise the ‘beautiful and historic county’ of Cornwall.
By flying the flag of St Piran outside the building in Masham Street, SW1, Mr Jenrick say he is restoring a tradition in paying tribute to the historic counties of England, recognising that they can play a significant role in “encouraging community pride, and can help deliver benefits for both tourism and economic growth”.
Mr Thomas said this was a welcome move to promote Cornwall.
“Because of the pandemic, we won’t be able to enjoy the St Piran’s Day parades and concerts which have become such an important part of our lives here in West Cornwall,” Mr Thomas said.
“This is a welcome move to remind people in the capital of the individual threads that bind the country together and, in particular, of the proud and distinctive heritage and culture of Cornwall.”
