I’ve learned that however hard I work to change something, unless there is an improvement in the lived experience little is achieved. This is certainly true for access to NHS dentistry here in West Cornwall, so my effort has been to secure change in Westminster where the policy sits whilst working with dentists, NHS managers here in Cornwall and NHS commissioners in the Department of Health to get all the ‘ducks in a row’. The survey I’m hosting - https://www.derekthomas.org/dentalservices - collects real data and identifies the extent of the problem regarding access to a dentist so please join 100s of others and complete it as soon as you can. If you want a paper copy, please call my office on 01736 363038.
Along with this ‘on the ground’ survey I have secured a commitment from the Health Minister that the contract, that is the root of the problem, will be shelved in favour of a better way to pay dentists for their work. In the meantime, the Government announced this week £50million of additional funding for NHS dentists to tackle the backlog. This is something I’ve been pressing for because I know too many examples of people really struggling with their oral health and need treatment and I know that dentists are willing and available to take up the challenge.
Another online tool which may be of interest is the consultation on the Government’s Joint Fisheries Statement that determines plans on how we can create a sustainable vibrant fishing industry in UK-controlled waters. Any fishing vessel licensed to fish in UK waters must abide by these plans. To take part in the consultation go to this link.
This document sets out a UK wide legally strategic policy framework to deliver our world class sustainable fisheries and marine aquaculture. The consultation is open until 12 April as are a long list of proposed detailed Fisheries Management Plans all intended to deliver a sustainable and well managed fishery across UK controlled waters. The aspect that may cheer many is that, if licensed foreign vessels want to continue to fish in our waters, they are equally subject to these plans and the rules that accompany these plans. Much of which will be drafted with the input of our own fish producer organisations.
If you are someone who would benefit from some friendly support and help towards getting a job, I may have the thing you need! On Saturday 29th I am hosting an informal event with cake and refreshments to chat about a piece of work that takes place next month hosted by the Cornwall Sport Foundation (which I chair) designed to help build fresh confidence for people who are unemployed. There is also an opportunity to meet the team involved. Attending this gathering Saturday does not be commit you to anything at all but you may find the conversation interesting. The purpose is to meet people who are on your side and help build the confidence needed to find a job or new career. Phone my office if this is of interest for more details, please.
The situation in Ukraine is very concerning although I doubt that President Putin has any real appetite for violent conflict. He has made his intention clear in relation to Ukraine but turning the dial to physical combat is a significant gear change that will have brutal consequences for all concerned. However, the situation is not helped by the constant commentary by some of my colleagues in Parliament who want us to believe they know what they are talking about. The PM and other world leaders are better informed and able to say what is needed. The war of words by others is hardly helping to de-escalate the situation. My prayers are with those living in Ukraine who deserve to live in peace but fear everyday what may unfold.
A quick reminder that used postage stamps are always welcome and can be posted to my Penzance office please!
