Derek has arranged for Alok Sharma to talk to local residents about his work co-ordinating the government’s action to achieve Net Zero.
Derek and the Climate Focus team have been hosting a series of events to enable local residents to learn about climate change, and the action taken locally to address the impacts of the climate crisis. They have been taking place on Zoom, so their popularity has spread outside Cornwall - and all are very welcome.
The group has heard presentations from local speakers – most recently from Penwith farmers who showed how they are prioritising sustainability in their food production – and now are talking to the UK government’s climate change minister.
Alok Sharma is a Cabinet minister, chair of the Climate Action Implementation Committee, and is President of COP26, the United Nations Climate Change conference. He led the government’s diplomatic efforts in the conference which led to the world’s commitment to doubling adaptation finance and requesting countries to present more ambitious climate pledges next year.
Derek says:
“Alok is a great advocate for Net Zero, and his efforts at the Glasgow conference were crucial in achieving progress on tackling climate change. I don’t think any one person has done more to keep “1.5 alive”.
“I was thrilled when he agreed to talk to our Climate Focus group, and I know they will have some great questions for him.”
The meeting is on Zoom on Thursday 24th March at 5 pm.
